Larkin Howell Mystery

Larkin Howell  or Larkin Jesse Howell, Which is it, question (1). Born about 1804 Ashe Co., North Carolina. Mother and Father Unknown, Question (2) Marriages, How many and to who, Question (3).What Happened to him, question (4). Out of every one I have talked to about this man, this is as far as anyone can get.  I have put together what I have and what I have heard from others. Anyone with any information on Larkin Howell b Please send me what information you have and I will post thing as they come in, in an attempt to see what we can come up with.

    This is the way it think it goes.

Larkin Howell born about 1804 Ashe Co. NC. My records indicate his father may have been a Jim or James Howell.  Married First wife name unknown for sure but see but I have gathered this info. (He first married a Hall girl (first name unknown, but whose dad was Jesse Hall)  or This Marriage bond was found in the Annals of Floyd County 1800-1826.

Bond dated 12 Oct. 1826 by Jesse Howell and Harry Stratton for marriage shortly to be had between Jesse Howell and Fanny Collier.

I hereby certify that I am willing and give my consent for my son Jesse Howell to obtain marriage lisens to marry Fany Coller.  Witness my hand this 11 October 1826.

Who ever his first wife was they had  a child named Jesse Howell. This wife either died or they divorced. I think died do to the fact the Larkin has the child with him. Larkin then married again to a Priscilla age 25 in 1850 Russell Co. VA Census. See Below.

If this is factual Larkin's birth should be should be at the 1804 to 1805 range. Now for Priscilla she would have been 15 at the birth of Lilburn, which is not out of the question. Priscilla Dye is the name I keep hearing. This making her born about 1825. Then we have Larkin married to Eufraisa "Fracey, Vempasy, Nufracy, Francis, Tempy" Dye/McFarland.  I have read some thing that say Priscilla and Eurfraisa were sisters. I think they are one in the same person, due to the many names the show up for Eufraisa. Then there is the question of was Eurfrasia a Dye or a McFarland. I received this e-mail with this information in it.

Concerning his third wife Eufraisa "Fracey". What I have is told me by her grand daughter and grand son who are still living in Floyd Co. Kentucky. Eufraisa was a McFarland. She married a Dye. She had two children by Dye, Lilburn and Malinda. Mr. Dye passed away when the children were young. She married Larkin and he raised her two children. The went by the name Howell until they were grown, then Lilburn took the name of his paternal father Dye.

   We do know that Lilburn and Malinda changed their last names to Dye as adults in Floyd Co. KY. Information form Floyd census records and marriage bonds show this to be true.  This means that Priscilla/Eurfrasia, was a Dye and had these kids out of wedlock Which the family would have covered up, or she was a McFarland that married a Dye and he either died or they divorced, and she had the kids, Which Larkin raised as Howells till they became of age. By the e-mail above I looks like the second is the true story.

Eufrasia is the last wife I have for Larkin, she went on to marry at least two other men, a James Roberts and a Matthew Gillespie.  Eurfrasia is burial in the Rice Cemetery, at Dana, KY.

From the same e-mail information about Larkins death.

(Larkin died at the hands of three of his sons. He was on the road to West Virginia when they ambushed him. He is buried beside the road in an unmarked grave just inside the West Virginia line.)

I have also heard that when he came home from the war he had sores all over his body and the family was embarrass by him. Story goes he left home and never returned.

Larkin was born about 1804 in Ash Co. NC.

After Larkin died she never married again as best her grandchildren can remember who live in Dana.

I will try and find the name of his first wife in my records which are at home and I am writing this from work.

My research finds Larkin Howell, son of James Howell (I doubt if his middle name was Jesse) born in Ashe County, NC about 1803. He first married a Hall girl (first name unknown, but whose dad was Jesse Hall.) Larkin's first child was named Jesse probably after his maternal grand father. Wife #1 died and the Halls and Larkin and son Jesse moved to Virginia. There he met and married Euphrasia (aka Fracie, Frazy, Priscilla) McFarland-Dye, who was widowed with 2 children. After moving to floyd Co, KY, that union produced about 7 kids, including my grandfather George Washington Howell, who married back into that same Hall family, Louisa Jane Hall'. I am George Howell the III.  If you are near a LDS Family History Center, ask for a micro-film titled the Howell Chronicles, taken from the book of the same name, which I authored.
