Age 65, of Britton MI, died Nov. 2, at Herrieck Hospital in Tecumseh, MI. Born Feb. 15, 1933, in Prestonsburg, son of the late Logan and Ella Hatfield Blackburn. Survivors include wife, Garnet Craft Blackburn; four sons, Bill Jr., Charles, Bud and Greg Blackburn; three dau. Karen Pennington, Jorene Dietrich and Barb Bennett; three sisters, Mary George, Thelma Jamison, Rowena Roberts. Burial was in Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti, MI.

Joseph D. Harkins

Age 58, of Lexington, died Nov 30, 1998 at his home. Son of Billie Holiday Harkins Hobbs Lyon and the late Joseph D. Harkins Jr. of Prestonsburg. Survivors include wife, Susan Grissom Harkins; two sons, Joseph D. Harkins IV and John Robinson Harkins; one step daughter Elizabeth Ashley Hale; stepfather, Ollie Lyon;

Ezra Collins

Age 68, of West Prestonsburg, died Nov. 29, at Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital.  Born Nov. 11, 1930, in Johns Creek, son of the later Glover and Gertie Lewis Collins. Survivors include wife, Dorothy Hunt Collins; one dau. Mary Lou Collins; two brothers, Connie and Charles Collins; four sisters, Geraldine Collins, Sylvia Collins, Maxine Woods and Jo Mae Arbogast. Burial was in the Woods Cemetery of Slick Rock on Cow Creek.

Melissa "Missy" Ann Newman

Age 26, of Betsy Layne, died Nov. 25, at Highland Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg. Born Sept. 11, 1972, in Paintsville, the dau of Gene Edward and Phyllis Ann Tackett. survivors include husband, Randy Newman; Parents, two sons, Zachary Clay and Chase Newman; one brother, Keith Edward Tackett; Maternal grandmother, Elwanda Slayer; paternal grandmother Nina Grigsby. Burial was in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, KY.

Bobby Hall

Age 57, of Melvin, died Nov. 28, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital.  Born Oct. 10, 1941, in Melvin, s/o the late Madison and Anzie Tackett Hall. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Newsome Hall; five sons, Bobby Jo Hall Jr., Bill Hall, John Hall, Timothy Hall and Jamie Hall; two dau., Debbie Gale Hall and Lola Leann Hall; two brothers Ernest and Franklin Hall; one sister, Jewell Hall. Burial was in the Tackett Cemetery at Melvin, KY.

Margie Boyd Layne

Age 86, of Dana, died Dec. 1, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital.   Born Oct. 18, 1912, in Dana, step dau of Alice Boyd Akers and d/o Willie Akers and Nannie Kidd Akers. Preceded in death by 1st husband Weeks Boyd and 2nd husband Buck Layne. Survivors include stepmother, two sons, Bobby Boyd and Jessie Lee Boyd; two dau. Maggie Young and Irene Mashburn; five half brothers, Curtis, Earl lee, James, Willie E. and Nelson Akers; two sisters, Maggie Alcock and Lillie Akers; three half sisters, Allen Richards, Sharon Akers and Linda Akers. Burial was in the Boyd Cemetery, Boyd Branch, Dana KY.

Crecie Prater Joseph

Age 89, of Prestonsburg, Died Nov. 29, at the residence of her son. Born Oct. 31, 1909, in Pyramid, d/o the late Daniel and Rhoda Pitts Prater.  She was preceded in death by husband Corbin Joseph. Survivors include two sons, Maryland Burl and Hershel Joseph; one step-dau. Marie DeRossett; one sister, Louraine Kilburn, Burial was in the Richmond Cemetery in Prestonsburg, KY.

Ollie J. McKinney

Age 88, of Harold, died Nov. 30, at HRMC, Prestonsburg. Born Sept. 13, 1910, in Harold, d/o the late John and Gracie Allen McKinney. Survivors include one dau. Elewease Akers; one brother Add McKinney; Burial was in the Roberts and Howell Cemetery at Harold, KY.

Billy Jean May

Age 70, of Michigan, died Nov, 11. Born Nov 28, 1927, s/o Mazie May and the late Melvin May. In addition to his mother, he is survived by three children, Billy Jean May Jr. Linda Sue May Prater, Michael May; two sisters, Betty Jo May Estepp and Barbara Ellen May Booth; one brother, Daniel May. Entombment was in Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ray "Pay" Moore

Age 67, of McDowell, died Nov. 25, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital. Born Jan. 1, 1931, in Floyd CO. s/o the late Buck and Virgie Newsome Moore. He was preceded in death by Anna Lee Moore, Nov. 6, 1997. Survivors include five sons, Benny Ray, Kenny Dean, Louie, Claude and Carl Moore; one sister Roxie Moore;  Burial was in the Greenbury Hall Cemetery at McDowell.

Bertha Sparkman

Age 89, of Topmost, died Nov. 26, at Riverview Manor Nursing Home. Born Dec. 29, 1908, in Knott Co. d/o the late R. G. Sparkman and Sarah Margaret Watts Sparkman. Survivors include two son, Douglas and Marcus Sparkman; one dau, Norma Jean Patton; one sister Sally Halbrooks. Burial was in the Watts Family Cemetery at Garner.

William Estell Newhouse Jr.

Age 27, of Topmost, dies Nov. 23, at McDowell Appalachian regional Hospital. Born Feb. 6, 1971, in Trenton, Mi. s/o the late Rose Mary Hicks Smith. Survivors include wife, Shelly Collins Newhouse; two sons, Kayne Michael and  Cliff Henry Newhouse. ; two daughters  Shayne Layne and Rose Marie Newhouse; two brothers, Tommy and Jay Newhouse; one sister, Kim Penzes. Burial was in the Joe Hall Cemetery at Topmost.

Age 81 of Beaver, died Nov. 28, at HRMC in Prestonsburg Born April 26, 1917 at Ligon, d/o the late Preston and Melvina Jones Reynolds.  Survivors include husband, Noah Vance Sr.; one son Noah Vance Jr.; two dau., Fayetta Poenisch and Bertha Dean Hall; one brother, Homer Reynolds; four sisters, Tommie Vance, Edith Eilhite, Ida Gayheart and Hazel Goble. Burial was in the Vance Cemetery at Beaver.

Age 80, of Auxier, formerly of West Prestonsburg, died Dec 1, at HRMC, Prestonsburg. Born May 16m 1918, in West Prestonsburg, s/o the late John B. And Jenny Hyden. Survivors include six sons, John B. Oscar Lee, Bill, Keith, James and Jack D. Hyden; three dau. Bonnie Clymer, Ella Jarvis, Jenny Kynn Romain; one sister Sara Stapleton. Burial was in the Miller Cemetery on Spurlock.

David Watson

Age 70, of Martin, died Dec, 1. at his residence. Born June 17, 1928, in Lackey, the s/o the late Crocket and Alvie Hoover Watson. Survivors include wife, Alpha Jean May Watson; son David d. Watson II; four dau., Marena Hale Nelson, Linda Sue DeRossett, Anne Margaret Allen and Carla Jean Robinson; two brothers, Chester A. and Isaac E. Watson.

Lois Slone Powers

Age 64, of Auxier, died Nov. 29th, at the residence of her granddaughter, in Richmond. Born Sept. 17, 1934, at Dema, d/o the late Roosevelt and Margaret Casaebolt Slone. She was preceded in death by husband Elbert Powers Jr. Survivors include one dau., Deborah Akers; one brother William J. Slone; four sisters, Subrinia Jones, Betty   Powers, Mary Kestel and Clotine Hicks. Burial was in the Osborne Cemetery at Bypro.

Commodore P. Griffith

Age 85, of Pikeville, died Dec. 2nd. at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. Born in Knott Co., Aug. 4, 1913, s/o the late Crockett and Elizabeth Sexton Criffith. Survivors include two brothers, Crockett Grifith Jr. and Corbitt Raymond Griffith; three dau., Susie Stambaugh , Beulah Mae Bayless and Pauline Porter. Burial was in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.

Brandy Caudill

Age 71, of Southgate MI, died Oct 20th. in Springhill, FL. S/o Bertha Caudill of Elsitt and the late G. H. Caudill. Survivors include mother, one dau. Judy DeLeonardis; one son, Phillip Caudill; one brother, Iveria Caudill.

Age 88, of Huston Texas, formerly of Stamping Ground, Died Nov, 22, 1998. Born March 21, 1910 at Alliance, Floyd County, d/o the late John N. and Viola Stephens Hamilton. She was preceded in death by husband Haney T. Parrish. Survivors include her only son, Howard Benton Spalding, one sister Vivian Hale, three brothers Alex, Roy and Don Hamilton. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery, Stamping Ground.

Mildred Ryan

Age 76, of Prestonsburg, died Nov. 23, at the Riverview Manor Nursing Home in Prestonsburg. Born March 20, 1922 in Prestonsburg, d/o the lat Joe P. Tackett Sr. and Hazel Minerva Wallen Tackett. Survivors include her husband, Milton Ryan; two dau., Catherine Gregory and Ann Stumbo;  brothers, Joe P. Tackett Jr. , judge Charles Tackett. Burial was made in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, KY.

Artie Bowling Marks Mckinney

Age 91, of Prestonsburg, died Dec. 3, At HRMC Prestonsburg. Born Nov. 18, 1907, in Pike Co. d/o the late Andrew Jackson Mullins and Roxie Yates Mullins Kidd. She was preceded in death by first husband Bernie Marks and her second husband Wilson McKinney. Survivors include five sons, Charles Bowling, Harold Bowling, James McKinney, Willard R, Mckinney and Kenneth McKinney; one Dau. Anna Mae Perkins; one brother Carmel Kidd; one sister, Edith Juff. Orga Newsome

Age 75, of Teaberry, died Dec. 2, 1998 at McDowell Hospital. Born Dec. 25, 1922, in Pike CO. d/o the late James Thomas Gillespie and Nancy Emiline McCown Gillespie.  She was preceded in death by husband Cecil Newsome. Survivors include four sons, Andy Lee Newsome, Walker "RED" Newsome, Charles Newsome, Joe Wheeler Newsome; nine dau. Eve Hall Combs

Age 98, of Garner, died, Dec. 4, at Hazard Medical Center. Born July 15, 1900, in Knott Co. d/o Will Slone and Nancy Ann Owens Slone. She was preceded in death by first Husband Perry Hall, and second husband, Denny Combs. survivors include four sons, Clester Hall, Delmas Roy Hall, Cleon Hall and Dillard Ray Hall; two dau., Vivian Corvin and Denise Michelle Hall; one sister Ida Hall. Burial is in the Rene Hall Cemetery at Topmost.

Sie Bennett Hamilton

Age 29, of Grass lake MI, died Dec. 6, following an Auto accident. Born march 27, 1969, in Lorain OH. s/o Sie B. Hamilton and Inette Newsome Hamilton. Survivors include wife, Karol Malone Hamilton; two sons Sie Bradley Hamilton, Bennett Blake Hamilton; one step dau, Karrie Logsdon; one brother Kevin Ray Hamilton; two sister, Versie Rachelle Wilson and Goldie Renae Hamilton. Burial was in the Newsome Branch Cemetery at Vergie.

Otis Ratliff

Age 83, of Lackey, died Saturday, December 5, 1998, in the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was born November 17, 1915, in Emma, the son of the late Samuel Ratliff and Rhoda Ellen Smith Ratliff. He was a retired coal miner working for National Mines, a member of the Lackey Freewill Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy, World War II veteran, a member of the American Legion, life time member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 128, Garrett. In addition to his wife, Bertha Sexton Ratliff, he is survived by five daughters, Rita Williams of Franklin, Indiana, Debbie Ratliff and Sandra Collins, both of Lackey, Rhonda Johnson of Danville, Rebecca Collins of Wayland and six grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 7, at 2 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergymen Johnny Collins and Buddy Jones officiating. Burial was in the Lackey Cemetery

Everett E. Hall

Age 84, of Wheelwright, died Friday, December 4, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington following an extended illness. Born on May 16, 1914, in Wheelwright, he was the son of the late Lee Hall Jr. and Cora Hall. He was a retired state employee and merchant. A member of the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge No. 889, where he was a past master, a charter member of the Eastern Star No. 447 and a member of the DAV 128 at Garrett. Survivors include his wife, Mattie Franklin Hall; two sons, Raymond E. Hall of Cocoa, Florida; Robert E. Hall of Monticello; one daughter, Barbara H. Gullett of Bypro; one sister, Dorthula Childers of Flemingsburg; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 7, at 11 a.m., at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Louie Ferrari officiating. Burial was made in the Buckingham Cemetery

Paul M. Vanderpool

Age 70, of Garrett, died Thursday, December 3, 1998, at his residence. He was born August 7, 1928, at McDowell, the son of the late Wm. Vanderpool and Cordelia Sexton Vanderpool. He was a retired heavy equipment operator, owner of Owens Oil Company, a member of the Stone Coal Old Regular Baptist Church and was a board member of the Garrett Volunteer Fire Department., In addition to his wife, Vivian Scott Vanderpool, he is survived by two sons, Dale Vanderpool of Sunbury, Ohio, Kenny Vanderpool of Garrett; three brothers, Robert Vanderpool of Plymouth, Ohio, Elliott Vanderpool of Kendallville, Indiana, James Vanderpool of Ohio; two sisters, Olvie Reed of Hueysville, Rosie Hayes of Cincinnati, Ohio, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 6, at 11 a.m. at the Stone Coal Old Regular Baptist Church, Garrett, with the Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial was in the Ewing Scott Cemetery on Stone Coal Road at Garrett

Vivian M. Stumbo

Private graveside funeral services for Vivian M. Stumbo, 78, were held November 9 at the Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar, Colorado. She was born December 5, 1919, at Mare Creek, the daughter of the late Ben and Nora Clark Maynard. She died November 6, 1998, at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado of complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Stumbo on February 25, 1995. She is survived by her daughters, Bella Stumbo of Los Angeles, California, and Linda Goudge of Golden, Colorado.

Hazel Music Baldridge

Age 86, of East Point, died Friday, December 4, 1998, at Riverview Manor Nursing Home, Prestonsburg, following an extended illness, Born December 6, 1911 at Little Paint Creek (Floyd County), she was the daughter of the late William Lewis Music and Hattie Stone Music. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Baldridge, on December 21, 1995. She was a member of the Little Paint First Church of God. Survivors include four daughters, Hattie Lou Howard, Patty Spradlin, Bonnie Hughes and Barbara Meek, all of Prestonsburg; three sons, H. Gene Baldridge of Ashland, and Delmar Baldridge and Harold "Bud" Baldridge, both of Prestonsburg; four sisters, Alta Howard and Gertrude Auxier, both of East Point, Mary Badgett of Finley, Ohio, and Nell Robinson of Florida; two brothers, Dewey Earl Music and Bob Music, both of East Point; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday, December 7, at 11 a.m., at the Little Paint First Church of God with Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Burial was in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel

Age 46, of Jackson, died Sunday, December 6, 1998, at his residence. A native of Prestonsburg, he was a long-time resident of Winchester and the son of Peggy Spradlin George of Winchester and the late M. Douglas George. He was a retired engineer with BellSouth and a member of the First Church of God, in Winchester. Survivors include his wife, Linda McIntosh George, three sons, Brian Douglas George of Houston, Texas; Joshua Kelly George and Benjamin Michael George of Jackson; a sister, Carolyn George Allen of Winchester; a brother, David Brian George of Winchester. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, at 1 p.m. at the First Church of God by Rev. Bill Kanstantopoulos and Rev. Frank Curtis. Burial was in the Winchester Cemetery

Age 70, of Mousie died December 6, 1998, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital. He was born in Knott County on December 16, 1927 the son o Jay Conley and Dovie Gayheart Conley. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Conley; two sons, Johnny Conley of Culver, Indiana and Jerry Conley of North Judson, Indiana one stepson, David Duncan o: Mousie; two brothers, Raymond Conley of Mousie; and Bordk Conley of Lackey; one sister Gladys, and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Age 89, of Port Orange, Fl. Formerly of Prestonsburg, died Dec. 8th. Born Dec 17, 1908, in Prestonsburg, s/o the late C. S. and Bertha Ally Dickerson. He was preceded in death by wife Berta Johnson Dickerson on April 13, 1987.  Survivors include dau, Bertha Helen Risner; two brothers Fred L. Dickerson and Dr. Z. S. Dickerson Jr., one sister Josephine Meadows. Burial was in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery on Middle Creek Road.

Palmer Scutchfield

Age 88, of Wilmore, formerly of Prestonsburg, died Dec. 8th, at Kentucky Veterans Center in Wilmore. Born Dec. 5, 1910 at Water Gap, s/o the late Ed and Maggie Johnson Scutchfield.  He survived by one brother, Cote Scutchfield. Burial was in the Scutchfield Family Cemetery in Prestonsburg.

Myrtle Cooley Baisden

Age 98 of Prestonsburg, died Dec. 4th, at HRMC in Prestonsburg. Born June 16, 1900, in Prestonsburg, d/o the late James and Sally Banks Cooley. She was preceded in death by husband James R. Baisden.  She is survived by one son, James D. Baisden and two granddaughters.  Burial was in the Richmond Memorial Cemetery in Prestonsburg.

Omar Mathews

Age 78, of Oak Grove, died Dec. 12, 1998, at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville TN. Born May 8, 1920, s/o Nora Elliott Mathews and the late George Mathews. He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. survivors include his mother, Wife, Velma Reynolds Mathews; one one Omar E. Mathew Jr.; one sister, Cladys Jones; Burial was in the Green Hill memorial Gardens.

Darlene Clay Angel

Age 42, of Danridge, TN, died Dec. 12th, at Park West Hospital, Knoxville, TN. Born Sept. 17, 1956, in Dwale, d/o Tom Clay and the late Ernestine Davis Clay. Father survivors as well as husband, Gary Angel; two sons, Robin and Anthony; one dau.   Falicia Angel; one brother Donald Clay; four sisters, Linda Angel, Shirley Bolton, Brenda Clay and Paula Juenger.  Burial was in Davison Memorial Gardens at Ivel, KY.

Age 67, of Pikeville, died Dec. 8th, at his residence. Born July 4, 1931 in Pike County, the s/o Pearl Carter and the late Estill Lee Carter. Survivors include wife, Dorothy Walters Carter; one son, Jimmy Carter; one Dau., Libby Carter; two brothers, Sam and Estill L. Age 70, of Mousie, died Dec. 6, at out Lady of the Way Hospital at Marting. Born Dec. 16,, 1927 in Knott Co. the s/o Jay and Dovie Gayheart Conley. Age 84, of Prestonsburg, died, Dec 13, 1998. Born March 27, 1914, at Hindman, d/o the late Maryland Delong and Mary Ellen Allen Maggard. She was preceded in death by husband A. B. Banner Meade on March 7, 1983. Burial was in Davidson memorial Gardens at Ivel, KY

Age 78, of Ashland, died Dec. 10, 1998. Born Jan. 9, 1920 in Auxier, the d/o the late Dave W. and Nancy M. Porter Collins. She was preceded in death by husband, Charles Crum. Survivors include two dau, Doris Jean Colins and Ondalee Kelly; one son bobby Gene Goble; one brother, Lee Alvis Collins. Burial was in the  Kirby Flats Cemetery in Ashland, KY.

Age 74, of Clay City, formerly of Price, died Thursday, December 16, St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, following an extended illness. Born on February 18, 1924, in Pike County, he was the son of the late Dennis and Dona Tackett Little. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the Pilgrims Rest Old Regular Baptist Church at Price, a member of local 5899 at Wheelwright. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Slone Little; two daughters, Celestiue Fogarty of Louisville, Phyllis Fogarty of Corydon, Indiana; two sisters, Jeanette Thacker of Huntington, Indiana, Adith Morris of Hippo; two grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, December 19, at 1 l a.m. at the Pilgrims Rest Old Regular Baptist Church at Price, with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.  Burial will be in the Little Cemetery at Price.


Darlene Clay Angel

Age 42, of Dandridge, Tennessee, died Saturday, December 12, 1998, at the Park West Hospital; in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was born September 17, 1956, in Dwale, the daughter of Tom Clay of Wellington, and the late Emestine Davis Clay. She was a member of the Trinity Assembly of God in Lake Worth, Florida. Her husband, Gary Angel, survives. In addition to her father and husband. she is survived by two sons, Robin Angel and Anthony Angel both of Dandridge, Tennessee; one daughter, Falicia Angel of Dandridge, Tennessee; one brother, Donald Clay of Cincinnati, Ohio; four sisters, Linda Angel, Delray Beach, Florida, Shirley Bolton of Melbourne, Florida, Brenda Clay of Cincinnati, Ohio, Paula Juenger of Wellington. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 16, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, at Martin, with the clergymen Earl Waugh and Arnold Turner Jr. officiating. Burial was made in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, with the Hall Funeral ttome of Martin, caring for those arrangements.

Age, 57, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, formerly of Garrett, died Saturday, December 19, 1998, at the Hillcrest Hospital in Oklahoma. Born February 16, 1941 at Garrett, he was the son of the late Fonzo and Geneva Turner. Survivors include his wife, Mary Turner; eight children, Robert, Russell, Thomas, Joseph, Jamie, Tina, Terri and Tammy; five brothers, Jeff Turner of Martin, Ricky Turner and Larry Turner, both of Garrett, and Bob Turner and Jack Turner, both of Oklahoma; six sisters, Lois Malbus, Carol Baker, Sandy Turner and Helen Combs, all of Oklahoma, Sula Noble of Ohio, and Kathy Murphy of Garrett; and 16grandchildren.  Funeral services were Tuesday, December 22, at the Vondel Smith South Colonial Chapel in Oklahoma. Burial was in the Moore City Cemetery in Oklahoma.

Alkie Marie Akers Burton

Age 79, of Albion, Michigan, formerly of Floyd County, died Saturday, December 5, 1998, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall, Michigan. Born April 24, 1919 at Dana, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Minnie Jarrell Akers. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Issac Case, and her second husband, Paul Burton. She moved to Albion, Michigan, in 1952 and worked for Coming Glass Company for 23 years, retiring after the plant closed. Survivors include two sons, Buel "Bud" Case of Albion, Michigan., and Yuel "Duke" Case of Marshall, Michigan; five daughters, Ann Tackett, Jewell Burkwalt, Creasie "Crea" Ralston, Wallean Burkwalt and Annette "Susie" Case, all of Homer, Michigan; three brothers, Elder Walter Akers and Bradley Akers, both of Kentucky, and Clark Akers of Ohio; two sisters, Alpha Kidd and Ruth Boyd, both of Kentucky; 20 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Wednesday, December 9, at 11 a.m., at the Tidd-Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Albion, Michigan, with Rev. Jim Berger officiating. Burial was in the Albion Memorial Gardens.

Janice Arnett Haywood

Age 77, of Johnstown, Ohio, formerly of Floyd County, died December 12, 1998, in Columbus, Ohio, following a brief illness. Born August 10, 1921 at Middle Creek, she was the daughter of the late D. B. "Boone" and Minerva Fitzpatrick Amett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Haywood, in 1971.  Survivors include two brothers, Joe H. Amett of West Prestonsburg and John E. Arnett of Wheelersburg, Ohio; one sister, Mary G. Johnson of Abbott Creek; one son, Curtis A. Haywood of Logan, Ohio; three daughters, Mabel Jean Ferrin of Tampa, Florida, Judy Mobley of London, and Mary Helen Boehm of Johnstown, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Clarence Lee Hinkle

Age 61, of Stanville, died Sunday, December 20, 1998, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital in Martin, following an extended illness. Born November 30, 1937 in Pike County, he was the son of the late Clarence and Wilda Scalf Hinkle. He was a disabled Coal miner and a member of the Mattie Methodist Church in Louisa. Effie Tibbs Hamilton

Age 93, a resident of Mt. Manor Nursing Home in Pikeville, died Friday, December 18, 1998, following an extended illness. Born March 8, 1905 in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Ratliff Tibbs and Ballard Tibbs. She was a member of the Pikeville Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Hamilton. Survivors include three sons, Charles E. Hamilton of Ypsilanti, Michigan, James Hamilton of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, and Bob Hamilton of Pikeville; one daughter, Jewell Lee of Pikeville; two sisters, Flora Stanley of Pikeville and Virgie Gross of Harold; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were Monday, December 21, at 11 a.m., at the J. W. Call and Son Funeral Home Chapel, with the Pikeville Freewill Baptist Church ministers officiating. Age 66, of Lima, Ohio, died December 16, 1998, at St. Rita's Medical Center. Born February 13, 1932 at Risner, she was the daughter of the late James and Sarah Prater Hale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence E. Adkins, on January 10, 1998. She retired from JCPenney's. She was a member of the Lima Missionary Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Trinity Chapter 16, Social Order of the Beauceant
and Grand Cross of Color Rainbow Girls. Survivors include one son, Gregory Adkins of Fulton, New York; one daughter, Kimberly Alberts of Lima, Ohio; three brothers, Bill Hale of McArthur, Ohio, Lawrence Hale of Prestonsburg, and Clyde Hale of Martin; one sister, Vema Hicks of Wilmington, Ohio; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were Friday, December 18, at 11:30 a.m., at the Lima Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Brock officiating. Burial was in the Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Beulah Mae Hughes

Age 89, of Hueysville, died Saturday, December 19, 1998, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin. Born April 15, 1909 in Red Warrior, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Lora Louverna Stamper Pennington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billie Hughes. Ballard Moore

Age 89, of Plymouth, Ohio, died December 16, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Willard, Ohio, following a long illness. Born April 7, 1909 in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Albert and Emmie Moore. He lived and worked in Floyd County coal mines until 1969. He moved to Plymouth, Ohio, in 1971. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Plymouth, Ohio, and the United Mine Workers Union. Survivors include his wife,  Mary M. Moore; daughters, Betty Lou Shop and Emma Kelling, both of Columbus, Ohio, Theada Tuttle and Janet Swartz, both of Plymouth, Ohio. and Freda Dye of Willard, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Saturday, December 19, at 12:30 p.m., at the Church of Christ in Plymouth, Ohio, with minister Don Beverly officiating. Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Shiloh, Ohio.

Age 76, of Prestonsburg, died Tuesday, December 29, 1998, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin, following a short illness. He was born April 22, 1922, at Red Fox, the son of the late Ruben Amburgey and Minnie Adams Amburgey. He was a retired coal miner; formerly employed by Stephens Elkhorn and Spurlock Coal Company, a member of the U.M.W.A., a lifetime member of the Garrett DAV, and member and pastor of Rockfork Freewill Baptist Church ofGarrett, In addition to his wife, Bemiece Compton Amburgey, he is survived by three brothers, Thomas E. Amburgey of Dema, Olin Amburgey of Langley, Eugene Amburgey of Sidney, Ohio, and one sister, Opal Werling of Sidney, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 1, at 11:00a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel at Martin, with the Elders Wendell Crager and others officiating. Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.


Eva Anna Mitchell Furman

Age 88, of Betsy Layne, died Saturday, December 26, 1998, at her residence, following a brief illness, Born on January 2, 1910, in Jennings, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late John Calvin and Edith Sarah Moyer Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Clarence Hamilton Furman. Survivors include four daughters, Meredith Joy Meade of Betsy Layne; Elizabeth Susan Furman of Betsy Layne; Mary Anna Blevins of Clyde, Ohio and Christine Furman of Betsy Layne; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Joner Ousley

Age63, of Claypool, Indiana, died Sunday, December 27, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, in Warsaw, Indiana. He was born February 13, 1935, in Prestonsburg, the son of Alvin Ousley and Melvinia Pitts. He retired from Zimmer in Warsaw, Indiana, in 1993. He was a member of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church, Warsaw, Indiana, since 1960. He was a member of the Sportsman Association, Silver Lake, Indiana. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Ousley, of Claypool, Indiana; two sons, Robbie R. O. Ousley of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Nathan D. Ousley of Warsaw, Indiana; five brothers, C. Wade of Warsaw, Indiana, Chas Ray of Claypool, Indiana, Bemos of Etna Green, Indiana, Carson of' Silver Lake, Indiana, and Homer Ousley of Pierceton, Indiana; three sisters, Bernice Conn of Decatur, Indiana, Magdalene Howard of Claypool, Indiana; and Nan Robinson of Prestonsburg; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 29, at the Titus Funeral Home in Warsaw, Indiana, with Pastor Glenn Hughes and Pastor Albert Whitaker officiating. Levi Conn

Age 70, of Martin, died Monday, December 28, 1998, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, in Prestonsburg, following a long illness. He was born March 14, 1928, in   Martin, the son of the late Columbus Conn and Polly Ann Conn. He was a coal miner, formerly employed by Turner Elkhorn Coal Company, a member of the UMWA Local No. 9845, in Martin, and a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife, Irene Layne Conn, three daughters, Georgianne Adkins and Mearilla Pitts both of Martin, Merlene Back of Salyersville; three brothers, Harry Conn, Fred Conn, and Rexford Conn all of Martin; two sisters, Ida Ann Meade of Printer, Martha Bell Holthouse of Hueysville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 31, at 1:30 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel in Martin, with the clergymen Ellis Stephens and Taulbee Goodman officiating. Beulah Faye Robinette

Age 71, of Zebulon, died Friday, December 25, 1998, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital. She was born in Pike County, September 28, 1927, the daughter of the late Lou Emma Francis Caines and James Jackson Caines. She was a member of the Zebulon Church of Christ. Daniels Paul V. Daniels

Age 75, of Van Lear, died December 22, 1998, at Highlands Regional Medical Center. He was born September 7, 1923, in Johnson County, the son of the late Milroy Daniels and Bettie Ward Daniels. He was a retired coal miner. Survivors include his wife, Maxine Boyd Daniels; two sons, Paul V. Daniels Jr. of Danville and Jimmy Daniels of Oil Springs; one daughter, Pat Daniels Coleman of Paintsville; and eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, Funeral services were conducted December 24, at 11:00 a.m., at the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel in Paintsville, with Phillip Lucas officiating. Randall Parsons

Age 64, of Lima, Ohio, died Sunday, December 27, 1998, at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, Ohio. Born May 7, 1934, at Allen, he was the son of the late Grant Parsons and Bessie Hamilton Parsons. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1990, after 37 1/2 years as a block repairman. He was a lifetime member of the Lafayette Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the UAW No. 1219. His wife, Susie Parsons, died the day before him. Survivors include two sons, Randall L. Parsons of Cairo, Ohio, and John E. Parsons of Naples, Florida; four daughters, Susan Loraine Venables, Brenda Thomas, and Ashley Parsons, all of Lima, Ohio, and Judy Cole of Bellefontaine, Ohio; five brothers, Willy Parsons of Toledo, Ohio, Ed Parsons, Raymond Parson and Elmer Parsons, all of Allen, and Douglas Parsons of Paintsville; three sisters, Violet McGwire of Allen, Mary Alice Foot of Binghamton, New York, and Ann Crouder of Portland, Oregon; 14 grandchildren and one great-grand-child. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 30, at 11 a.m., at the Lafayette Missionary   Baptist Church, with pastor Tim Douglas and preacher Ellis Puckett officiating. Lucy Blackburn Burchett

Age 90, of Bowling Green, formerly of Prestonsburg, died Friday, December 25, 1998, at her residence, following an extended illness. Born February 12, 1908 in, Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and America Burchett Blackburn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest "Chaffie" Burchett, on October 24, 1982. She was a former teacher and merchant. She was a member of the First Baptist Church (Irene Cole Memorial), Prestonsburg. Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Burchett Blackerby of Bowling Green; one sister, Elizabeth Cesco of Prestonsburg; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Hamilton and Virginia Hall Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Greenbury Justice, and her second husband, Charlie Kidd. Survivors include four sons, D.P. Edna L. Madison McBurney

Age 83, of Prestonsburg, died Sunday, December 27, 1998, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center. She was born on March 9, 1915, in Logan, West Virginia, the daughter of the late William and Lottie Saunders Stephens. She was a retired bookkeeper for H.B. Ranier Construction. She was twice married, first to Fred Madison, and later to Eugene E. McBumey. Both preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Beth Compton and Judith Ann Adams both of Prestonsburg; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 30, at 11 a.m., in the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Love officiating. Burial will be in the Mayo Cemetery in Prestonsburg.


Samuel "Sam" Hale

Age 83, of West Prestonsburg, died Saturday, December 26, 1998, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, following an extended illness. Born July 24, 1915 at Goodloe, he was the son of the late James and Susie Stephens Hale. He was a former school teacher, state representative in 1958, a !aw enforcement officer and a farmer. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 293, Prestonsburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Ann Stephens Hale, on January 7, 1986. Survivors include one son, Samuel Stephens Hale of Blue River; one daughter, Susan Alice Milner of Louisville; three grandchildren. Funeral services were Tuesday, December 29, at 1 p.m., at the Caner Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Dan Heintzelman officiating. Burial was in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
