Ezra Robinson

Age 75, died Friday, February 27, 1998, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Born March 9, 1921 in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Elzie Robinson and Annabell Blair. He was a coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Sherman Robinson. Survivors include two sons, James Randall Robinson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and David Lee Robinson of Paintsvilte; three daughters, Anna Ballard of Raleigh, North Carolina, Brenda Sue Elam of Lowmansville, and Catherine Robinson of Paintsville; two brothers, Elzie Robinson Jr. of Huntsville, Tennessee, and Elmer Lee Robinson of Rochester, New York; two sisters, Ella Burton of Van Lear and Ida Mae Hopkins of Hellier; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Malcom Dearing

Age 91, of Wayland, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness. Born September 4, 1906 at Bonyar in Barren County, he was the son of the late Shepherd Montgomery Dearing and Effie Duvall Dearing. He was a retired self-employed auto dealer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church at Mousie and James W. Alley Masonic Lodge No. 869. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta Martin Dearing. Survivors include one son, Michael Martin Dearing of Covington; one half-sister, Lorene Gray of Kentucky; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Clyde Gordon May

Age 88, of Van Lear, died Monday, March 2, 1998, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home in Prestonsburg, following an extended illness. Born January 30, 1910 at Block House Bottom in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Lindsey and Clara Harmon May. He was disabled. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include one daughter, Sabrina Saenz of Andrews, Texas; one stepson, Charles Music of Amemllo, Texas; two brothers, Patrick "Pat" May of Auxier and Bill May of David; and three sisters, Leona Winkler of Toledo, Ohio, Audrey Beverly of Columbus, Ohio, and Ethel Lilly of Van Lear. Arnold Lee Cole

Age 54, of Melvin, died Saturday, February 28, 1998, at McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness. Born December 26, 1943 iia Floyd County, he was the son of the late Londy and Hattie Gibson Cole. He was a disabled carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Edith Collins; three sons, Joseph Collins of David, Rodney Cole of North Carolina, and Christopher Cole of Melvin; one stepson, Michael Collins of Ohio; two daughters, Donna Price of Melvin and Bonita Hall of Ligon; four brothers, Phillip Cole and Ernie Cole, both of Melvin, Delmas Cole of Lexington, and Ronnie Cole of Bracken County; and 14 grandchildren. Age 63, of Betsy Layne, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at her residence, following an extended illness. Born June 27, 1934 in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Lacy Barbe and Cussie Spurlock Barbe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert L. Swiger. Survivors include one son, Mark L. Swiger of Tram; three stepsons, Herbert K. Swiger of Ivel, Anthony Q. Swiger of Tram, and James A. Age 80, of Langley, died Friday, February 27, 1998, at his residence, following a brief illness. Born February 24, 1918 in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Felix and Lena Hoover Dudley. He was a retired carpenter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Collins Dudley. Age 77, of Auxier, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg. Born November 29, 1920 in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Germ McKenzie and Mary Boyd. He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a member of the East Point Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Adkins. Carrie H. Evans

Age 89, of Prestonsburg, formerly of Elliott County, died Monday, February 23, 1998, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg. Born September 10, 1908 at Mazie in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. W.A. Hay and Sallie Fannin Hay. She was a member of the Mazie Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe E. Evans. Survivors include two sons, Byron Evans of Ashland and Adrian Evans of Sandy Hook; one daughter, Carole Rice of Prestonsburg; ten grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Wednesday, February 25, at 11 a.m., at the Lewis and Ferguson Funeral Home at Sandy Hook, with Rev. Willard Bailey and Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Artie Pearl Younce

Age 90, of Panama City, Florida, formerly of Stanville, died Friday, February 27, 1998, at the National Health Nursing Home in Panama City. Born November 7, 1907 at Osborne, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Tackett Sturgill. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Orange City, Florida, and a former member of the Betsy Layne Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Younce. Survivors include one daughter, Emma Jean Slone of Panama City, Florida; two brothers, Samuel Sturgill of Albany and Aner Sturgill of Sandyville, West Virginia; two sisters, Delphia Hale of Harold and Geneva May of Detroit, Michigan; two grandchildren, four great- grandchildren, and and great-great-grandchild. Born September 20, 1904 at Drift, she was the daughter of the late Van Buren and Melvina Spencer Martin. She was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Kendall Stumbo. Survivors include one son, James Oliver Stumbo of Williamson, West Virginia; one daughter, Audrey Stumbo Gunnell of Martin; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Donna Sizemore of Minnie; and his maternal grandmother, Hattie Tackett of Hi Hat. Funeral services will be Friday, March 13, at 11 a.m., at the Church of God of Prophecy at Ligon. with the clergyman Larry Tackett officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Teaberry.

Billy Ray Shepherd

Age 58, of Salyersville, died Saturday, February 28, 1998, at the V.A. Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia. Born March 19, 1939 at David, he was the son of Lana Miller Shepherd of David and the late Bennie Shepherd. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Cindy Sparks Shepherd: two sons, Keith Shepherd of Lowell, Florida, and Kevin Shepherd of Lafayette, Indiana; three daughters, Terri Mitchell of Fairland, Indiana, Suzanne Shepherd of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Tammi Lee of Ohio; two brothers, Delbert Shepherd of Wabash, Indiana, and Albert Shepherd of Lexington: and eight grandchildren. Anderson Laferty

Age 88, of Prestonsburg, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. Born April 30, 1909 at Dwale, he was the son of the late Robert Lee "J. Bob" Lafeny and Nellie Jarrell Laferty. He was a retired coal miner, a member of the U.M.W.A. Local No. 9845, and a member of the Brandy Keg Freewill Baptist Church in Prestonsburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Daniel Laferty. Survivors include two sons, Stewart Laferty of Sidney and Clarence Laferty of Dublin, Ohio; two daughters, Shirley Halbert of Pikeville and Patsy Chaffins of Hindman; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were Saturday, March 7, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, with Birkey Lewis officiating. Burial was in the Richmond Memorial Gardens in Prestonsburg.

Clyde Bryant

Age 67, of Clarksfield, Ohio, formerly of Hi Hat, died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at Edison Health Care in Milan, Ohio, following an extended illness. Born April 18, 1930 in Hi Hat, he was the son of the late Johnnie and Lissie Bryant. He moved to Clarksfield, Ohio, in 1968. He had worked at the Sterling Foundry in Wellington, Ohio, and attended the Old Regular Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Kidd Bryant; one daughter, Phyliss Bryant of Tiffin, Ohio; one son, Glenn Bryant of Indiana; and two brothers, Sidney Bryant of Dayton, Ohio, and Ballard Bryant of Phillipsburg, Ohio. Services were held Saturday, March 7, at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church at Hi Hat. Burial was in the Newman Cemetery in Floyd County.

Kimberly Ann Floyd

Age 37, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, died Wednesday, February 25, 1998. Born August 4, 1960 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, she was the daughter of Howard "Fred" Stumbo of Prestonsburg, and the late Vicki Stumbo Wilson. She attended the Trinity Baptist Church. In addition to her father, she is survived by two daughters, Melissa Ann and Alisha Lee Floyd; three brothers, Joey Paul Reinhart of Indianapolis, Indiana, Kirk Rojas of Louisville, and Danny Stumbo of Ypsilanti, Michigan; two sisters, Frieda Jean Stumbo Akers of McDowell, and Brenda Lee Stumbo of Ypsilanti, Michigan; and her grandmother, Anna Mae Byron of Louisville. A memorial services was held February 28, at 1:30 p.m., at the Stark Funeral Services Moore Memorial Chapel, with Rev. John Pyche Sr. officiating.

Claudette Boyd

Age 40, of Banner, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at her residence, following a brief illness. Born April 5, 1957 in Wise, Virginia, she was the daughter of Claude A. and Alahmae Robinson Ryan of Banner. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Benjamin Burl Boyd; two daughters, Princess Angelene Boyd of Lincoln Park, Michigan, and Benita Jo Boyd of Banner; and one brother, Tommy Ryan of Banner. Funeral services were Monday, March 9, at 11 a.m., at the Little Salem Old Regular Baptist Church at Dana, with Evangelist Bennie Blankenship officiating. Blane Hall

Age 73, of New London, Ohio, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk, Ohio, following a sudden illness. Born February 9, 1925 at Osborne, he was the son of the late Grant and Ida Belle Salisbury Hall. He had lived in New London since 1950. He was a trunk driver for almost 40 years, for the former Brada Miller and most recently for Gregg Express. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of New London. He was a licensed baseball umpire for 50 years. Survivors include his wife, Magalene Hall; five daughters, Linda Crabbs, Gwen Coy and Vivian Perkins, all of New London,  Ohio, Carol Hunter of Sandusky, Ohio, and Amy Howard of Huron, Ohio; two sons, Danny Kidd of Huron, Ohio, and Kim Hall of New London, Ohio; one brother, Roy "Red" Hall of New London, Ohio; three sisters, Gerdell Martin of Amherstdale, West Virginia, Lilla Mae Bernak of Gallatin, Tennessee, and Sam Fletcher of Exetor, New Hampshire; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday, March 9, at the First Baptist Church of New London, with Rev. Wayne Mott officiating. John Franklin Edwards

Age 59, of Albion, Michigan, formerly of Melvin, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at his residence, following an extended illness. Born March 10, 1938 in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Hales Edwards and Mandy Jane Smith Edwards. He was a retired factory worker. Survivors include his wife, Claudette Caudill Edwards; one son, Jeff Edwards of Elkhart, Indiana; one daughter, Patricia Younce of Elkhart, Indiana; three brothers, Samuel Edwards and Daniel Edwards, both of Albion, Michigan, and Lawrence Edwards of McAndrews; two sisters, Gertrude Gayheart of Maxion, Ohio, and Minnie Edwards of Albion, Michigan; and four grandchildren. Joe Allen Berger

Age 43, of Jackhorn, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at his residence, following an extended illness. Born May 11, 1954 at Virgie, he was the son of Evia Mullins Berger of Pikeville and the late Charles Berger. He was a disabled coal miner. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mary Joan Combs Berger; one son, Kelly Berger of Weeksbury; two step-sons, Clyde Jr. Estep of Kokomo, Indiana, and Lenard Estep of Jackhorn; two daughters, Misty Berger of Weeksbury and Amber Berger of Bevinsville; two step-daughters, Donna Hall of Weeksbury and Molly Estep of Martin; one brother, Kenneth Berger of Pikeville; four sisters, Evelyn Stilener and Belinda Tackett, both of Pikeville, Mary Frances Falulhaber of Columbus, Ohio, and Brenda Smith of Dorton; and seven step-grandchildren. Monroe Brooks Adams

Age 84, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at UK Medical Center in Lexington. Born May 20, 1913 at Coley, he was the son of the late Malcomb and Lula Sparks Adams. He was a former equipment operator for Floyd County. He was a member of the Chestnut Grove United Baptist Church, where he was also a deacon. He was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Prater Adams; one daughter, Charlene Baldridge of Prestonsburg; five sons, Larry Adams of David, Danny Adams, Donnie Adams, Paul Adams and Terry Adams, all of Prestonsburg; one sister, Pearl Prater of Warsaw, Indiana; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Tuesday, March 10, at 1 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, with Elders Chester Adkins, Alex Prater and Wallace Calhoun officiating. Billy Worth Music

Age 55, of Prestonsburg, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at his residence. Born November 20, 1942 in Prestonsburg, he was the son of Dorcas Montgomery Music of Prestonsburg and the late Worth Music. He was a barber, coal miner, and an Army Reserve veteran. He was a member of Zebulon Lodge No. 273, F&AM. In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son, Billy Worth Music II of Prestonsburg; four daughters, Rhea Lynn Necessary of Inez, Elizabeth May of Prestonsburg, Vickie Rice of Hippo, and Debbie Music of Denton, Texas; one brother, Tom Ed Music of Prestonsburg; and six grandchildren. Masonic services were conducted at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Friday, March 13, at 11 a.m., at the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Imogene "Jean" Kidd

Age 63, of Harold, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at her residence. Born April 25, 1934 in Betsy Layne, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ella Mae Smith Stratton. She was a former school bus driver, employed by the Floyd County School System for 23 years. Survivors include her husband, Mathew "Dump" K. Kidd; three sons, Luke Kidd of Betsy Layne, and Bertee Kidd and Joey Kidd, both of Harold; three daughters, Barbara Kidd of Dana, Cathy Rose of Harold, and Ima Jo Case of Betsy Layne; three brothers, James Stratton of Boldman, Arnold Stratton of Van Buren Arkansas, and Charles Stratton of West Virginia; two sisters, Pebble Stratton of Baltimore, Maryland, and Edna Marie Adkins of West Virginia; 16 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Betty Marshall Johnson

Age, 63,  died Friday, March 6, 1998, at her residence. Born January 24, 1935 in Prestonsburg, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Flonnie Young Marshall. Survivors include two daughters, Sue Collins of Prestonsburg and Brenda Reil of West Van Lear; one brother, John Earl "Bud" Marshall; four sisters, Ruby Bums of Paintsville, Wilma Blair of Denver, and Grace Holton and Myrtle Anderson, both of Prestonsburg; and four grandchildren. Shirley M. Ashcraft

Age 77, of Ypsilanti. Michigan, died Monday. March 9, 1998, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Born November 1. 1920 at Emma, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ginny Childers Weddington. She moved to Ypsilanti in 1966. She was a member of the Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death b! her first husband, John Lee Garrett. Robie Edward Kilgore

Age 25, of Tekonsha, Michigan, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at his residence. Born February 5, 1973 in Prestonsburg, he was the son of Janie E. Bailey Kilgore of Tekonsha, Michigan, and the late Robie Kilgore. He moved to the Tekonsha, Michigan area in his youth. He was a graduate of Tekonsha High School and served in the U.S. Army after graduation. He was bom March 6, 1956 in Fayette County, Kentucky, and was the son of John K. Back of Morehead and file late Joan Kegley Back. He was a graduate of University Breckinridge High School and Georgetown College, where he was awarded a four-year basketball scholarship. He played basketball under Coach Jim Reid. He also was a 1981 graduate of Mid-America College of Funeral Services, where he was a salutatorian. He was a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Kentucky, Tennessee, Horida, South Carolina, and North Carolina. He was a former manager of his father's funeral homes, The Layne- Stuckey-Back Funeral Home in Morehead and the Globe Funeral Home of Olive Hill.
